Sales of Print Books Grew Two Years in a Row

The old-fashioned book remains strong. Unit sales of print books have grown in the past two years, increasing by 2.8 percent in 2015 and 2.4 percent in 2014.

Just under 626 million units of print books were sold in 2015, according to a report by Publishers Weekly. The figures came from outlets that report to Nielsen BookScan, estimated to capture about 80 percent of print sales in the United States. The increase in print books is attributed largely to the popularity of adult coloring books.

The 2015 sales figures reinforce a recent industry forecast that print books, newspapers, and magazines—not their digital versions—are expected to remain the choice of consumers worldwide in 2020.

Ovum, a global analyst firm, predicted that revenue from print publishing, although declining, will still account for over a third of revenues in the publishing industry by 2020.
